The high prevalence of NSSI in adolescence and the associated risk factors, including:

  • deteriorating academic performance

  • being bullied

  • poor social connectedness

place school staff in a unique position to identify and refer at risk youth, facilitate help-seeking, and prevent escalation of NSSI. Referral by school staff is a significant factor in whether adolescents who self-injure receive timely treatment.
